Restaurantes Populares are restaurants run at by various municipal governments, often with some financial support from state or federal governments. They serve nutritious, low cost meals to the general public.

As of 2022, there are approximately 248 restaurantes across the country operating in over 8 states.

How do they work?

At the national level, the legal foundation for restaurantes populares is the right to food in Brazil’s constitution. At the local level, many are enshrined in local legislation. In some cities, the government collaborates with private companies to manage logistics, supply chains, or staffing.
